Unlike most of the other things that we adorn ourselves with, jewellery is only used for its aesthetic value. This of course doesn't include dog tags used in the military or medical alert bracelets used to identify any important illnesses or allergies.
Although clothes are bought or favoured for their aesthetic value their true purpose is functional. We wear clothes to protect us from the elements and to maintain a sense of modesty. But jewellery, other than the two instances already mentioned, is only bought for its aesthetic value.
The reasons we buy jewellery vary from person to person. Many men getting married these days prefer to buy tungsten carbide rings as wedding rings for themselves instead of the traditional gold band. (more...)
