Unlike most of the other things that we adorn ourselves with, jewellery is only used for its aesthetic value. This of course doesn't include dog tags used in the military or medical alert bracelets used to identify any important illnesses or allergies.
Although clothes are bought or favoured for their aesthetic value their true purpose is functional. We wear clothes to protect us from the elements and to maintain a sense of modesty. But jewellery, other than the two instances already mentioned, is only bought for its aesthetic value.
The reasons we buy jewellery vary from person to person. Many men getting married these days prefer to buy tungsten carbide rings as wedding rings for themselves instead of the traditional gold band.
Most of the reasons to buy jewellery have to do with celebrations. An engagement ring bought to celebrate a couple's love or wedding rings to bind them together. Even a pair of simple diamond earrings is usually bought to celebrate an anniversary.
Jewellery is made for both men and women. Many different kinds of metals, metal alloys and precious gems are used to make the beautiful jewellery that people adorn themselves with. Depending on what mood you are in on a given day you may choose to wear a different piece of jewellery, because as jewellery is aesthetic we often use it to express ourselves.
